Barium (Ba)
Grundstoffet barium blev opdaget i 1808.
Barium findes kun i kombination med andre elementer. Dette jordalkalimetal er metallisk, blødt og sølvhvidt, når det er rent, og det ligner calcium. Metallet oxiderer let og skal opbevares under petroleum eller andre iltfrie væsker.
Bariums vigtige forbindelser er peroxid, chlorid, sulfat, carbonat, nitrat og chlorat. De findes i pigmenter, maling, røntgendiagnostik og glasfremstilling. Andre former bruges i oliebrøndsborevæsker, gummiproduktion, rottegift og pyroteknik.
Bariumforbindelser, der er vand- eller syreopløselige, er giftige. Naturligt forekommende barium er en blanding af syv stabile isotoper, og 22 radioaktive isotoper vides at eksistere.
