tert-butylalkohol bruges som opløsningsmiddel og ethanoldenatureringsmiddel. Det er en aktiv ingrediens i malingsfjerner. Det fungerer som et mellemprodukt i produktionen af methyl tertiær butylether og ethyl tertiær butylether ved reaktion med methanol og ethanol. Det bruges også til fremstilling af tert-butylchlorid, tert-butylhydroperoxid, isobutylen og methylmethacrylat. Det fungerer som et brændstoftilsætningsstof såvel som en benzinoktanforstærker.
