Katalysator og UV-stabilisator.Nikkel(II)-2,4-pentandionat bruges som forløber for nikkel-bis(cyclooctadien)-katalysator. Det bruges også til afsætning af nikkel(II)oxid tynd film ved sol-gel teknikker på ledende glassubstrater. Yderligere bruges det i organisk syntese til at producere organometaler. Det er forbundet med dimethylgold(III) acetylacetonat bruges i guld på nikkelbelægning.
