Tips and Guidance for Users: What the F-Gas Regulation 2024/573 Means for Climate Chambers?

Since January 1, 2025, the revised F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 has been in effect — a key measure in reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the EU. For operators and users of climate chambers, this regulation introduces several changes. Below, you’ll find the most important information, guidance, and tips for applying the regulation to the use of modern climate chambers.

Existing Devices Are Grandfathered In

One of the most frequently asked questions concerns the continued use of existing devices with synthetic refrigerants. The answer is: Climate chambers that are already installed are protected under a grandfather clause and may continue to be used. Maintenance is also still permitted, provided that recycled refrigerants are used. For users, this means there is no immediate need for action regarding existing equipment.

New Models Use Natural Refrigerants

As of early 2025, BINDER is offering climate chambers that use environmentally friendly, natural refrigerants – including isobutane (R-600a), propane (R-290), and CO₂ (R-744). These substances have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of ≤ 3 and are therefore fully compliant with the regulation.

Particularly noteworthy: The constant climate chambers and cooling incubators of the KBF and KB series have been further developed and now offer higher energy efficiency and extended temperature ranges – all while maintaining the same precision and reliability.

Safety When Using Flammable Refrigerants

Isobutane and propane are flammable refrigerants. To ensure safe operation, BINDER has integrated appropriate safety mechanisms, such as double metallic separation and the use of only very small quantities of refrigerant. It is also recommended to install these devices in well-ventilated rooms with a minimum volume of 20 m³. The GS safety certification confirms compliance with relevant safety standards. For users, nothing changes in day-to-day handling; no additional training is required.

Transitional Rules for Synthetic Refrigerants

For climate chambers that operate at temperatures below -50 °C, special exemptions apply according to EU Regulation 2024/2729. These devices may continue to use R-23 until the end of 2028, provided that safety-related justifications are documented. No official approval is required.

Maintenance Remains Important – Even for New Models

For reliable and long-term operation, annual inspection of the devices is recommended. This includes:

  • Checking and, if necessary, replacing worn parts
  • Calibrating temperature and humidity sensors
  • Leak checks in the refrigerant circuit

Even for devices with natural refrigerants, regular maintenance remains a key factor for operational safety and efficiency.

Long-Term Availability and Sustainability

Switching to natural refrigerants offers not only regulatory security but also economic benefits: Energy consumption can be reduced by up to 66%, significantly lowering operating costs. Furthermore, isobutane, propane, and CO₂ are available long-term and are not subject to additional restrictions under the F-Gas Regulation.

BINDER follows a clear sustainability strategy: The company is certified according to ISO 9001, 14001, and 50001, has received the EcoVadis award, and is already operating at 80% climate neutrality (Scope 1 and 2). By 2045, BINDER aims to achieve full climate neutrality.

Conclusion: Safe, Efficient, and Future-Proof

The F-Gas Regulation 2024/573 marks an important step toward greater climate protection in refrigeration technology. With the new generations of devices and a clear focus on natural refrigerants, users of BINDER climate chambers are well equipped. Existing devices can continue to be used, and new models fully meet the latest requirements – safe, efficient, and sustainable.

At a Glance – What Users Should Know Now

  • Existing devices may continue to be used and maintained with recycled refrigerants (grandfather clause)
  • New BINDER units use natural refrigerants (R-600a, R-290, R-744) – environmentally friendly, safe, and energy efficient
  • No user training required – handling remains unchanged. Devices with flammable refrigerants are safe to operate thanks to built-in safety features (e.g. GS-certified)
  • Synthetic refrigerants in specialized units (e.g. MKT/MKFT) remain permitted under certain conditions until 2028
  • Maintenance is recommended – regular inspection increases operational safety and extends lifespan
  • Future-proof and sustainable – natural refrigerants are available long-term and significantly reduce operating costs
