Ytterbium(III)chloridhydrat bruges som en effektiv katalysator til fremstilling af acetaler ved at reagere med trimethylorthoformiat. Det reagerer med N-alkylsalicylideneiminer for at fremstille yttrium(III) Schiff-basekomplekser. Det er meget udbredt som NMR-skiftreagens, calciumionprobe og i DNA-mikroarrays. Dens vandfri form fungerer som en Lewis syre og katalyserer alkyleringsreaktionerne såsom aldolreaktion og Pictet-Spengler-reaktion.
