Natriumtetraborat bruges som co-katalysator til (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl og natriumhypochloritoxidation af alkoholer i grønnere og ikke-chlorerede opløsningsmidler. Det fungerer som et reagens til nedbrydning af oxider og silikater ved fusion. Det bruges til at fremstille buffere, som bruges til gelelektroforese af DNA. Det fungerer som en kilde til borat, mikronæringsstofgødning, konserveringsmiddel i konservering, additiv i keramiske slips og glasurer. Det bruges også som forløber for natriumperboratmonohydrat og borsyre. Det finder anvendelse som fluoridafgiftning, neutronabsorber i atomreaktorer og til fremstilling af uudslettelig blæk til dyppepenne.
