Samarium(III)chloridhydrat bruges til fremstilling af samariummetal, som finder anvendelse som magneter. Det kombineres med natriumchlorid for at få en eutektisk blanding med lavt smeltepunkt. Ydermere tjener det som en precursor til fremstilling af andre samariumsalte og bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)alkylsamarium(III)-komplekser. Derudover tjener det som en katalysator for hydrogenering og hydrosilylering af alkener.
