Oxidation.Ruthenium(III)chloridhydrat bruges som katalysator for alkynfunktionalisering og oxidationsreaktioner. Det bruges som nøgleråmaterialer til fremstilling af forskellige ruthenium-baserede katalysatorer, herunder Grubbs' katalysatorer. Det bruges til fremstilling af nanopartikulær ruthenium-aluminiumoxyhydroxidkatalysator, som er effektiv til dehydrogenering af alkoholer til de tilsvarende aldehyder. Det er også involveret i syntesen af 2-ethyl-3-methylquinoliner fra primære aromatiske aminer og triallylamin.
