Rhodium(III)chloridhydrat bruges som katalysator til omdannelse af methan til eddikesyre, isomerisering af alkener, reduktion af aromatiske ringe og hydrering af acetylen. Det er involveret i hydrosilyleringen af alfa,beta-umættede estere til dannelse af dimethylketentrimethylsilylacetaler. Det spiller en vigtig rolle som katalysator for konjugatreduktion af kanelaldehyder efterfulgt af krydskobling med arylboronsyrer.
