Description

Enumerate Clostridium perfringens in foods with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Perfringens OPSP Agar Base (Dehydrated) when used with Perfringes (OPSP) Selective Supplements –A & B (SR0076 and SR0077). Perfringens OPSP Agar Base, is based on the formulation developed by Handford1.The medium utilizes sulphadiazine, oleandomycin phosphate and polymyxin B sulphate (10IU/mL), presented as freeze-dried supplements (SR0076 and SR0077) to give a high degree of selectivity and specificity for Clostridium perfringens.

Clostridium perfringens is a spore-forming gram-positive bacterium that is found in many environmental sources as well as in the intestines of humans and animals. C. perfringens infection often occurs when foods are prepared in large quantities and kept warm for a long time before serving. Outbreaks often happen in institutions, such as hospitals, school cafeterias, prisons, and nursing homes, or at events with catered food.

Use Perfringens OPSP Agar Base for the enumeration of Clostridium perfringens in food samples.

  • Selective: sulphadiazine, oleandomycin phosphate and polymyxin B sulphate provide high degree of selectivity to the medium.
  • Easy-to-read: as Clostridium perfringens form black colored colonies.

Sulphite reducing bacteria other than Clostridium perfringens such as salmonellae, Proteus spp. and Citrobacter freundii, as well as staphylococci and Bacillus species, are inhibited on Perfringens OPSP Agar. Perfringens OPSP Agar also, has the advantage of inhibiting growth of Clostridium bifermentans and Clostridium butyricum.

Sodium metabisulphite and ammonium ferric citrate are used as an indicator of sulphite reduction by Clostridium perfringens, which produces black colonies on this medium when using a pour plate technique.
