Jern(II)chlorid bruges til syntese af jernkomplekser som jern(II)hydroxid. Det fungerer som en forløber for hydrerede jern(III)oxider, der er magnetiske pigmenter. Det tjener som et reduktionsmiddel i organisk syntese. Anvendes også som reducerende flokkuleringsmiddel i spildevandsrensning, især til affald indeholdende chromat.
