Det spiller en vigtig rolle i fremstillingen af lim til sko, læderprodukter og tagdækning. Det bruges også til reaktioner, der involverer meget stærke baser, såsom fremstilling af Grignard-reagenser. Også involveret i fremstillingen af organolithiumforbindelser, nemlig butyllithium.
