Cobalt(III) 2,4-pentandionat anvendes som polymerisationskatalysator, vulkaniseringsmiddel, pigment i harpiks og glas. Det bruges også til fremstilling af monoporphyrinater. Yderligere bruges det i kinetiske undersøgelser af jern-svovlproteiner. Ud over dette reagerer det med trimethylaluminium for at fremstille Me( 3 Al/Co(acac) 3 .
